PDF Map Help

Please use a recent version (at least 7, preferably 8.0) of ®Adobe reader or acrobat. As with any program if you have a new version of the program it will probably read files from an older version, BUT if you have an old version of the program it will almost never read files created with a recent version.

99% of all problems we've encountered are caused by an outdated version of ®Acrobat reader—If you are experiencing difficulties opening, saving, viewing or printing ®Adobe PDF documents the most likely problem is an old version of the reader on your computer(s). You can download the free ®Adobe reader here.

  • May I use the PDF Atlas, part of it, or any other files or information from mapCR.com or Toucan Guides in my business?
  • I use a Mac

I use a Mac—There are some compatability problems with Mac OSs and the auto launch of Adobe reader. You will probably have better luck downloading and saving the file on your hard drive, opening the stand alone Adobe reader then using the reader to open the downloaded file.

There is an odd quirk on macs where trying to open a pdf by clicking on it gives errors or blank docs. You must open the application first (Adobe Reader) then use file>open file.pdf

I downloaded the Atlas, but now I can't find it—We can't tell you exactly where it is because that depends on your system settings, and any new name you assigned to the file during download. Typically downloads can be found on the desktop, or in MyDocuments.
If you did not rename the file it should be easy to locate by clicking Start>>Search>>For Files or Folders... and then choosing Documents and entering CostaRica in the "All or part of the document name:" box. If you renamed the file enter the new name in the "All or part of the document name:" box.

If you still cannot locate it you can always click here and enter your order# to re-download.

I got the Atlas, but not the Indexes. Where are they?—On older versions (pre 2008) of the Atlas the indexes are included as an attachment. When you have the Atlas open in ®Adobe reader, click the tab on the lower left corner labeled "Attachments," then click on Indexes.pdf The indexes are separated into an attachment to facilitate searching. When you do a search in the Atlas, clicking on one of the results will display that location on the appropriate map. If you would like to include the Indexes in your search please select "Use Advanced Search Options," then click the "Include Attachments" check box.

I'm using Windows 98 and cannot install ®Adobe reader Version 8.0—The Atlas can be opened on many machines running ®Adobe reader version 6.0.2 or higher under Windows 98SE operating systems. Note, you will need the latest upgrade of ®Adobe reader version 6. Ignore the message stating "This file appears to have been created with a newer version..." Some of the search functions may be deprecated, and we cannot guarantee compatibility.
