Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve

La Virgen, Costa Rica

One of the most beautiful rainforests we’ve seen. The University of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Museum have taken pains to make access to the reserve as unobtrusive as possible. A long hanging bridge over the wild Sarapiquí River separates the reserve from the 21st century, and from there on it’s just you and nature on seven well-maintained trails, one of which goes to a waterfall. A bridge in the heart of the reserve lets you walk beside the forest canopy. Admission for a self-guided tour is $15 (kids under 6 free, 6-14, $8, students, $10) and is good for three days. A guided tour costs about $5 more per person. In addition to birding tours, there are night tours for viewing amphibians and bats. Multiday educational programs are offered to student groups; they also have volunteer and internship opportunities.
