In Chilamate, five minutes by car west of Puerto Viejo, is a complex of covered walkways leading through beautiful gardens to a riverside dining room, an open, airy lounging area with hammocks, and a conference room. Its comfortable cabins are raised on pillars to jungle (and bird’s-nest) level. There are also bungalows across the road near the botanical garden, nestled at the forest’s edge. Selva Verde’s primary rainforest forest reserve is accessed by a bridge across the river. Early-morning birdwalks are offered for guests, and three- to four-hour walks with naturalist guides can be arranged.
