The 1516-hectare La Selva research station and biological reserve is owned by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). Almost 350 different bird species have been observed there in a single day by the Audubon Society Birdathon. Research and education are the reserve’s top priorities. One of the many courses offered at La Selva is not for biologists but for the world’s decisionmakers: government and business leaders who need to balance economic development with the use, management, and conservation of nature. Roam La Selva’s 57 kilometers of well-kept trails through primary and secondary forest, and its arboretum La Selva rents bicycles and kayaks to guests. For guided walks (full-day $36, half-day $28), call the station at least a day ahead for reservations. Some of the trails are wheelchair accessible.
