Arenal Hanging Bridges (Puentes Colgantes)

A series of six well-constructed bridges spanning lush forest ravines. The bridges allow for sweeping views of the dramatic terrain as well as close-ups of sensuous tropical leaves as they sprout and howler monkeys moving through the trees. If you want to learn about the variety of life forms that crowd into every square foot of tropical nature, take this hike with an experienced guide (two to two and a half hours, depending on how many questions you ask). When we were there one May, it was drizzling all day, but that just seemed to enhance the rainforest experience. The circle of trails that connects the bridges has only one steep climb and is suitable for people of all ages. This is rainforest viewing at its best, very much like the Skywalk in Monteverde. Their Restaurant Los Puentes (open daily, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) has a view of the lake and volcano. The entrance is a few kilometers down a paved road to the right immediately after you cross Arenal Dam.
