Frogs, Butterflies, Bugs, Orchids, and Bats Beautiful, strange frogs used to live in the cloud forest. The golden toad, once endemic to the Monteverde area, was remarkable for its color and the poison glands behind its ears, but it has not been observed since 1989 and is feared to be extinct. Biologists believe that global warming has caused a general drying trend in the cloud forest, depriving the frogs of the gentle mists that were vital to their existence. The best place to see frogs now is the Frog Pond (open daily, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m).

A fascinating 45-minute guided tour of Costa Rica’s most beautiful frogs and toads. The project aims to study the amphibians, and is dedicated to preventing their extinction. It’s open at night so you can see the many frogs that are more active after dark. The entrance fee can be used twice on the same day. They also have a butterfly exhibit with over 40 species, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s south of downtown Santa Elena just before Hotel Poco a Poco. Recommended.
