created by Dr. Richard Laval, one of the world’s leading bat biologists, is a fascinating view into how the rainforest works. Expert guides lead you through many innovative exhibits demonstrating phenomena like the acuteness of a bat’s hearing, and the way their bones are related to our bones. Then you enter a dark area where 70 live bats of 8 species fly free on the other side of a glassed in enclosure that resembles the cloud forest at night. The bats have been accustomed to a reversed light schedule, so they are active in the daytime. The guided tour can last one to two hours and includes a video presentation. It is located on a hill across from Hotel El Bosque in Monteverde(open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.). Recommended.
